McMaster University announced Tuesday that Tristan Joyce will serve as interim head coach of the varsity men’s soccer team.

“We’re confident that Tristan will be an exceptional steward of the men’s soccer program and help build upon its recent success” says Keenan Jeppesen, Associate Director of High Performance at McMaster.

Joyce spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach with the program following a four-year playing career as the Marauders’ starting goalkeeper.

After serving for one season as an assistant coach then guiding the Marauders to an OUA Championship as interim head coach, Chris Markou will be moving on from his role with the Marauders.

The former Marauders men’s soccer player, Markou was a two-time CIAU all-Canadian and OUAA all-star, capturing the OUAA championship 1992. He helped lead his team to a pair of CIAU silver medals from 1992-93, as well as a CIAU bronze medal in 1995, being named to the all-tournament team that season. He and his staff led the Marauders to and OUA Gold medal in 2022 and finished 7th at the 2022 USports National Championships after a penalty shoot-out loss to the eventual champions and hosts Trinity Western in their opening game.

“We want to sincerely thank Chris for his time with the men’s soccer program and wish him the best in his future endeavors” adds Jeppesen. “The 2022 season was an incredible ride, culminating in an OUA title that doesn’t happen without his leadership and guidance during a period of transition.”

McMaster is continuing in its hiring process to fill the role of Soccer Program Manager & Head Coach, with consideration to both national and international candidates.

“Soccer is the global game which resonates deeply with our student body and presents a massive opportunity for our department and the university,” said Shawn Burt, Director of Athletics & Recreation.

“As we continue to work on various partnerships to elevate both our men’s and women’s programs, we will be extremely well positioned to capitalize on the momentum around soccer in Canada and transform Marauder soccer in the process.”
