The following post is courtesy of the University of Windsor Athletics department from July 20, 2023 https://golancers.ca/news/2023/7/20/womens-soccer-daniel-mendonca-contract-renewed-heading-into-2023-season.aspx.

The Lancer women’s soccer head coach Daniel Mendonca‘s contract has been renewed heading into the 2023-24 season.

Mendonca, a Windsor, Ontario native, became the Lancers head coach in 2019 and led the blue and gold to their best finish in recent years in 2022. With a sixth-place finish in the OUA west division, the Lancers qualified for the post season for the first time since 2016 and faced the third seeded Guelph Gryphons in the first round of the post-season.

Back at the helm, Mendonca is ready to take the team higher in the standings and deeper into the playoffs. “I am happy to be back on the sideline with the women’s soccer program. Since taking over the program in 2019, it has been the players’ and coaching staff’s goal to set a five-season plan to successfully deliver results in the classroom, in the community and on the pitch. We continue to have a positive outlook in front of us, and plan on building on a productive 2022 season.”

Helping him to do that will be a strong 2023 recruiting class that is comprised of both local athletes and players from around Canada. Another of Mendonca’s goals is to develop a program on making a positive impact on the local soccer community and they will do that through weekly game day plans to support community organizations.

The blue and gold kick off their season Labour Day weekend with a trip to Sault Ste. Marie where they will take on the Algoma Thunderbirds. The Lancers will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, September 9th when they host the York Lions at Alumni Stadium.
