    OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP (George Brown)

    Men's soccer championship
Oct 28-29, 2023
hosted by George Brown College
Courtesy of George Brown Athletics: https://athletics.georgebrown.ca/sports/msoc/2023-24/releases/Final_Four_Preview

The team to beat in the OCAA this year is the George Brown Huskies.

With a 10-0 record the Number 2 Nationally ranked team finished the season on a torrid pace with a 10-0 record with their only loss coming in preseason to Algoma University when they didn’t have the team fully formed.

The Huskies are looking to win the program’s first gold medal since 1973 as they host the OCAA Provincial Championship this weekend (October 28-29) at Esther Shiner Stadium.

The other three teams travelling to Toronto are the Seneca Sting, Humber Hawks and Conestoga Condors. Only the Provincial Champion will move on to the CCAA National Championship this year, since the St. Clair Saints are hosting the event and have the other spot. This marks the third straight time that George Brown, Humber and Seneca are in the Final Four.

    SEMI-FINAL MATCH #1

    12:00 p.m. Saturday October 28th

    Seneca Sting vs Conestoga Condors.

The Condors are experiencing one of their best campaigns in program history. They also went 10-0, finished first in the West Division during the regular season, and blew away both squads in their playoff matches to get to this point. If the Condors advance to the finals, it would mark the first time since 1979, which was the last time and the only time the program claimed the gold medal. The Condors have numerous weapons, led by Josip-Pavle Stojanovic and OCAA Rookie of the Year Ricardo Alvarado. They have also only allowed more than one goal in the match once.

Seneca is no stranger to the final four, as this marks their fourth straight season they earned a spot. Last year, they claimed the silver medal at the OCAA Provincial Championship and the CCAA National Championship. The Sting have been an offensive juggernaut this season. They averaged 58 goals per match during the regular season (all be it 32 goals came against Sault College), and kept that momentum in the playoffs, more specifically in the quarter-finals against the St. Clair Saints with a 5-4 win. A player to keep an eye on is Michael Pellegrini. The striker finished tied for second in the province with 13 goals.

    SEMI-FINAL MATCH #2

    3 p.m. Saturday October 28th

George Brown Huskies vs Humber Hawks.

The Huskies have been on an absolute tear this season. They did a program first, going undefeated at 10-0, scoring the most goals and surrendering the least in the province. Under OCAA Coach of the Year, John Williams, the team saw nine players named to either the East Division first-team or second-team all-star team. A pair of Huskies to watch are Yonis Jama, and Mark Do Coito. The two veterans joined the squad two years ago and are the only players on the roster who were a part of the Huskies silver medal and CCAA National Championship berth in 2021.

George Brown has claimed a medal at the last two Provincial Championships but is searching for the program’s first gold medal in 50 years.

Their opponents are the four-time defending Provincial Champions and two-time defending National Champions, Humber Hawks. Like the other squads in the final four, the Hawks are balanced and well-structured. They can score with the best of them but can also shut down any offence. They have only allowed more than one goal twice so far this campaign. The key player to keep an eye on is Exosse Kadiebue. The second-year forward led the team with 10 goals and was named West Division Player of the Year.

On Sunday, October 29, the bronze medal match will happen at 12 p.m., while the gold medal match will follow at 3 p.m.

All the matches can be streamed live on the OCAA Live Livestream Channel.
