Tyler Attardo scored all three goals to lead the York Lions to a 3-1 victory over the StFX X-Men in the fifth-place game at the 2023 Protocase U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championships in Sydney, N.S., Saturday.

Attardo opened the scoring in the 35th minute to put the eighth-seeded Lions up 1-0, but Logan Rieck replied for StFX five minutes later, sending the AUS champions into the dressing room on level terms.

Action picked up in the second half, as the teams combined for 20 shots, nine of them being on target. With the game appearing to be headed for penalties, Attardo took matters into his own hands with he second of the game in the 87th minute. He added an insurance marker during second-half stoppage time to seal the win for York.

StFX finishes the season with a 12-4-1 overall record (9-2-1 AUS), and improves one spot from their seventh-place finish last season. York matches the fifth-place finish that they achieved in 2019 – their last appearance at the national championship – and finished the year at 9-4-5 (7-2-3 OUA).
