Canadian Premier League side Atletico Ottawa is adding further Spanish flair to Carlos Gonzalez’s coaching staff.

Spanish coach Rafa Montenegro Delgado has posted about his imminent arrival to Atletico Ottawa as a performance analyst, signaling his first coaching move abroad.

Montenegro began his technical area career as a fitness coach and trainer at clubs like Vandalia de Peligros, Granada CF, and Malaga CF before testing his mettle as an assistant coach with CD Almunecar City four years ago.

Following another stint as a fitness coach back with FC Malaga’s academy, he spent the last season as a technical assistant with third division side Antequera CF, his hometown club who rest in the Spanish third tier.

“It is never easy to say goodbye to your home, and even less so when you are enjoying a historic season together with great people,” Rafa had posted upon his departure from Antequera CF, who look set to finish in the top half of their group in the Primera Federacion.

Given his fitness background, he arrives as a likely replacement for Jose Luis Schneider, Ottawa’s former physical trainer who left the club at the end of the season to join Cypriot side Apollon Limassol FC. While not confirmed, it looks like assistant coach and physical preparation lead David Galan will remain with the side into 2024, with Carleton Ravens Assistant Director of High Performance Kwesi Loney also expected to return.
