The McMaster Marauders Department of Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of Chris Markou as the next Head Coach of the men’s soccer program.

Markou fills the interim role after spending the past season with the team in an Assistant Coach capacity.

“Chris is a McMaster Soccer legend who exemplifies Marauder values and has the leadership, empathy and technical knowhow to lead through this transition,” said Keenan Jeppesen, Associate Director of High Performance. “We are excited to include him in the national search for a permanent head coach that will commence immediately after the 2022 season.”

A former Marauders men’s soccer player, Markou was a two-time CIAU all-Canadian and OUAA all-star, capturing the OUAA championship 1992. He helped lead his team to a pair of CIAU silver medals from 1992-93, as well as a CIAU bronze medal in 1995, being named to the all-tournament team that season.

Internationally, Markou represented McMaster and Canada at the World University Games in Fukoka, Japan in 1995. For his illustrious career, he was inducted into the McMaster Sport Hall of Fame with the class of 2008.

“Soccer is the global game which resonates deeply with our student body and presents a massive opportunity for our department and the university,” said Shawn Burt, Director of Athletics & Recreation.

“As we continue to work on various partnerships to elevate our women’s and men’s programs, we will be extremely well positioned to capitalize on the momentum around soccer in Canada and transform Marauder soccer in the process.”

Beyond McMaster, Markou is the owner of Futbol Plus, a Hamilton based player developmental program that focuses on preparing high performing athletes between the ages of 10-16 for university and collegiate programs across Canada, and the United States.

Markou will make his debut on the sidelines this fall, when the 2022 OUA men’s soccer season kicks off in September.
